Treatment Guide
Botox
Botox is a prescription drug that doctors have been using for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. Botox is a brand name for a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Whilst there are other brands, ‘Botox’ is the generic term because it was the first injectable botulinum toxin.
How do botulinum toxin (Botox) injections work?
Repeated muscle contractions are one of the causes of wrinkles on the face. Botulinum toxins like Botox temporarily block nerve signals to muscles. As a result, injected muscles can’t contract and they become weak or paralysed. These effects can last from 3 to 6 months. The muscle injected is dependent on the area(s) of concern and several areas can be treated in one session.
Botox can be used to treat many different areas such as:
Glabellar lines (frown lines)
Wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
Forehead creases
Creation of a brow lift
Corners of the mouth
Neck bands & folds
Jaw tension
Eyelid twitches (Blepharospasm)
Severe sweating (hyperhidrosis)
