Advanced RF Microneedling
What is Advanced RF Microneedling?
Advanced RF microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy, delivering controlled heat directly into the deeper layers of the skin through fine needles. This dual-action approach — mechanical micro-injury from the needles plus thermal energy from the radiofrequency — stimulates a significantly stronger collagen and elastin remodelling response than microneedling alone, making it one of the more advanced options available for skin tightening, texture and acne scarring.
How It Works
Fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin while simultaneously delivering radiofrequency energy to the dermis at a precisely controlled depth. This combination heats the deeper skin layers directly, triggering the body’s collagen remodelling process from within, while the needling itself stimulates the skin’s own wound-healing response at the surface. Because needle depth is adjustable, treatment can be tailored to different concerns and skin areas — from finer, more superficial settings for delicate areas to deeper settings for more established scarring or laxity.

Advanced RF Microneedling vs Traditional Microneedling
Traditional microneedling (such as Dermapen 4) works through mechanical micro-injury alone, triggering the skin’s natural healing and collagen response. RF microneedling adds a second, genuinely distinct mechanism — controlled heat delivered directly into the dermis — which research has found produces a stronger remodelling effect, particularly for acne scarring and skin laxity, than needling alone. It’s a more advanced option worth considering for more established concerns, though standard microneedling remains an excellent, gentler choice for general skin quality and less intensive needs.
What to Expect: Sessions, Comfort & Aftercare
Topical numbing cream is typically applied before treatment for comfort. Most clients describe mild discomfort during treatment, generally well tolerated. Downtime is usually a few days of redness and mild swelling, similar to more intensive microneedling — slightly more than standard microneedling alone, given the added thermal effect, but still considerably less than more invasive resurfacing options. A course of sessions, spaced around 4 weeks apart, is typically recommended for the best cumulative result.

A study of 30 patients with acne scars and large facial pores found significant clinical improvement in scar grade, pore size, skin surface roughness and dermal density following treatment. A preliminary study specifically evaluating a non-insulated microneedle RF device found moderate-to-excellent improvement in acne scar appearance and skin texture in 100% of patients, and moderate-to-excellent pore size improvement in over 93%. Separate research combining RF microneedling with topical treatments has shown further improved outcomes for atrophic acne scars in split-face, randomised, placebo-controlled trials.
